Rules of the Board Game


The board game of Retsami is played with two different coloured sets of 4 counters (red and white), on a board divided into 81 equal squares (9 rows of 9). A path is also marked on the board which spirals in ever decreasing squares to the middle square of the board which is known as the Home Square.


The object of the game is to reach the Home Square with any one of your 4 counters.


  1. To commence the game each player's counters are placed alternately on the first 8 Squares of the Way
  2. The players take it in turns to move. The player whose counter is on the eighth Square of the Way moves first
  3. In each move a player may do one of the following:
    1. Advance one counter along the Way to a vacant square provided it does not turn round more than one corner or overtake any other counter; or
    2. Move one counter in a straight line horizontally, vertically or diagonally to any square occupied by the superior counter of an opponent provided the path to the square is not blocked by any other counter. The opponent't counter is the removed from the board; or
    3. Re-enter a taken counter on any vacant square of the starting row.
  4. If a player perceives the occurrence of a stalemate situation, he can offer his opponent "Stalemate". The opponent must then either accept the stalemate (in which case the game is drawn) ir resolve the stalemate.


"The Way" is the inward-spiralling path delineated on the board.

"The starting row" is the first row of the Way (the first 9 squares).

"The leader" is the counter furthest advanced along the Way.

"Taking" - One counter "takes" another when it moves horizontally, vertically or diagonally to the square occupied by the other counter. The latter is removed from the board.

"Re-entry" - A counter is "re-entered" when it is placed on the board on a vacant square of the starting row after having been taken.

"Off-board" - A counter is "off-board" if it has been taken and not yet re-entered.

"Multi-functionalization" - A counter become multi-functional when it occupies a position which allows it to fulfill more than one purpose at once and at the same time. An example would be a counter which is threatening a leader at the same time as it is covering a row that the leader wants to enter.

"Superior counter/Inferior counter" - One counter is "superior" to another if it is advanced further along the Way. It is "inferior" to another counter if the other counter is further advanced.

"Covered" - A square is "covered" by any counter which is in a position to take a counter on that square.

"Outcovered" - A player is "out-covered" in respect of a particular square if the number of his counters which cover that square is matched or exceeded by the number of his opponent's counters which cover it.

"Safe Square" - A "safe square" is either an uncovered square or a square on which a player outcovers his opponent.

"Nailing" a counter - A counter is "nailed" when the square which it is on and any vacant square the which it can move is outcovered.
